In the fast-paced world of New Zealand and Australian logistics, the loading dock remains one of the most critical—and challenging—bottlenecks. It is a zone characterised by heavy lifting, repetitive strain, and the constant pressure of turnaround times. At Automate-X, we are committed to bringing world-class automation to our local shores, which is why we are thrilled to spotlight the Rocky Mobile Manipulation Robot (MMR) from our partner, XYZ Robotics.

Recently unveiled at major global exhibitions like MODEX and LogiMAT, Rocky has generated significant buzz for its ability to automate one of the most labour-intensive tasks in the supply chain: trailer loading and unloading.

As system integrators focused on "Next-generation intralogistics" for NZ and AU, we know our clients have questions about how this technology fits into a live operation. Below, we dive into the capabilities of Rocky MMR and how it can redefine efficiency in your warehouse.

What is the Rocky MMR?

Rocky is a cutting-edge Mobile Manipulation Robot designed specifically for the flexible handling of cases in warehouses and distribution centres. Unlike fixed telescopic conveyors or manual forklifts, Rocky combines the mobility of an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) with high-end robotic arm manipulation.

For our clients in Auckland, Sydney, and beyond, this means a solution that doesn't just sit in one place—it actively navigates your floor to tackle goods entering and leaving your facility.

1. True Versatility: Unloading and Loading

One of the most frequent questions we encounter is whether a system can handle both ends of the process. The answer with Rocky is a resounding yes.

Rocky is engineered to autonomously load and unload trailers and shipping containers. But its utility extends further than the dock door. By pairing Rocky with other units, it can facilitate complex (de)palletising operations, effectively bridging the gap between your receiving dock and your storage systems.

2. Speed That Matches Demand

Productivity is the currency of the modern warehouse. Manual unloading is physically demanding, leading to fatigue and inconsistent rates throughout a shift.

RockyOne delivers consistent, high-speed performance:

  • Cycle Time: Works at approximately 450 cycles per hour.
  • Throughput: With an intelligent gripper capable of handling 2–3 boxes per pick, it achieves a picking rate of over 800 cases per hour.
  • Turnaround: It can load or unload a full 40-foot standard container in just 2 hours.

For high-volume distribution centres in Australia and New Zealand, this consistency allows for precise scheduling and improved downstream throughput.

3. Handling the "Hard-to-Reach" Zones

Experienced warehouse operators know that the top layer of a container and the rear end near the door are the trickiest areas to automate.

Reaching the Top

Rocky utilises advanced 3D vision to scan the container face. When dealing with cases stacked close to the ceiling, it securely picks boxes from their side faces, transferring them smoothly off the top layer. Its motion planning algorithm is specifically tuned to ensure collision-free handling, even in tight vertical spaces.

Managing the Rear & Ramp

Transitioning from the warehouse floor to a trailer often involves navigating a dock ramp. Rocky is built to operate on these inclines and effectively avoids obstacles, such as the rear door header, ensuring safe handling right to the very edge of the trailer.

4. Multi-Dock Flexibility

Fixed automation equipment often requires a dedicated dock door, limiting operational flexibility. Rocky MMR breaks this mould.

Using SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) navigation, Rocky can move 360° freely across your warehouse floor. It isn't tethered to a single location; it can switch between different docks as trucks arrive, or adapt to different warehouse layouts with a quick setup. This mobility makes it an ideal investment for facilities that need agile assets rather than static infrastructure.

5. Designed for Your Workforce

At Automate-X, we believe automation should empower your team, not complicate their day.

  • Ease of Use: You don't need a robotics PhD to run Rocky. Warehouse personnel can operate the system after simple training, utilizing a user-friendly HMI on a wireless tablet.
  • 24/7 Operations: Rocky supports seamless round-the-clock operation. It can run on a wired power supply for continuous 3-shift workflows or utilise its batteries for cable-free movement when switching zones.
